CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
PROMPT WORKSHOP
(In class writing)
Each week, I gather a small group of 6-12 students, pose a prompt, and charge them to create as their inspiration moves them within an hour’s time. We then re-gather to share whatever lyrics cooked up, talk about roads taken, and figure out if what was created can serve as a springboard to further work.
COMEDY WORKSHOP/WRITING FUNNY SONGS
(In class writing)
Each week, we’ll listen to a comedy song from my existing catalog. Students will then be tasked with an in-class prompt covering the topic under discussion.
Previous topics covered include specifics, surprise, parody, meet-cutes, inner conflict, protesting too much, and more.
FORM WORKSHOPS
(More form calisthenics/less feedback intensive)
Every so often, I gather a small group of 6-12 students, take one of my existing lyrics, wipe out the actual lyric and create a “dummy” lyric using the exact same metrics. I then charge my students to do the same, allowing them to explore many different lyric forms in the process. Feedback is less important in this class, but work is shared and enjoyed by all.
Presentation of work is limited to 10 students
per session.
Auditing/participation only opportunities available.
